Grace Potter & The Nocturnals: Live from the Artists Den

As one of the last days of summer winded down on the Southwest Porch in New York's Bryant Park, Vermont rockers Grace Potter & The Nocturnals sent the season out in style with a night of funk, rock, and soul. Along with stand-outs from their self-titled 2010 album such as "Paris (Ooh La La)," "Medicine," and of course, "Hot Summer Night," the band treated fans to a cover of the Jefferson Airplane classic "White Rabbit," in which Potter expertly channeled another Grace.

GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS BIO

Born in Waitsfield, VT, Grace Potter was studying theatre at St. Lawrence University when drummer Matt Burr heard her singing at an open-mike night in 2002 and asked if she would form a band with him. After initially declining, Potter eventually reconsidered and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals was born, named for the band's late-night rehearsal habits. After two self-released records, the band signed with Hollywood Records in 2005 and released their major-label debut, This Is Somewhere, in 2007. But it is with their latest, self-titled album that the band is really breaking through: they were named one of Rolling Stone's "Best New Bands of 2010."

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals show

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals stretched the heat wave past sunset Thursday night with a sizzling free concert under the stars in Bryant Park...where a girl and her band (who've enjoyed critical and cult admiration) showed they could hold their own with the biggest acts in music. The moment wasn't lost on Potter, who was supposed to play just enough for the 60-minute "Artists Den," but couldn't resist playing "one more" and then "one more," kneading the show into two hours of funk, rock and sweet soul. She kept playing, she told the crowd, because, "You guys are music junkies, just like me." Songs from the band's recently released self-titled record, choice covers, as well as early hits including "Ah Mary" and "Stop the Bus" were all branded with Potter's vivacious vocal sexiness, and the kind of re- sounding determination that said she meant what she sang. In a word, incredible.

The band's collective performance was incredible. I could see the band was turned on by the setting and the turn out, and they put the energy right back at the crowd. I didn't expect they would play for two hours or so but these guys kept the energy up even though the temperature was sizzling too. Still, I couldn't leave till the last note. I really love the songs live and was glad to hear a few more of the new tunes from the Grace Potter and the Nocturnals cd. Still my favorite songs are Oasis and Medicine, but Tiny Light, especially the jamming outro to the song, is growing on me... Paris is such a hit. If it didn't chart it should. Man, I love this band.

Awesome show! They tore it up last nite, really cool small stage set up, I was lucky enough to get right up against the stage. The 1 more song encore turned into about 5 more like we all hoped too.

Where else would we rather be? Nowhere." Grace Potter wasn't the only one who felt this way last Thursday night. The audience was full of fortunate people, feeling like winners, who were all incredibly lucky to be where they wereThe spirit of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals brought a breath of country air to a stagnant New York City summer. The surprise, secret nature of the show lent a VIP feel to a great venue and consistently incredible live act. If summer has to end, this is a great way to blow it out.

I personally was expecting my socks to be blown off based purely on the pure perfection that is the bands third, self-titled album. Little did anyone in the roughly 200-deep crowd that not only were Ms. Potter and her Nocturnals about to blow everyones socks off their fee, but would also be redefining what a live concert experience should be in its most perfect formThe true star of the slow songs was the bands biggest hit to date, Apologies, played with the effortless aplomb of a band thats been around ten times as long as theirs. The Nocturnals opened up a quiet, personal song to the rest of us, inviting us to feel alongside them. It was a breathtaking few minutes.

AWESOME! .. is what I would describe the evening. I had never heard of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals before receiving the email invite just 24 hours before the show was to start. At first I was thinking of not going, but then decided to, and glad I did. Also met some nice fans online to enjoy the concert with. Planning on picking up a CD of hers today. Also spreading the work to my friends. Great venue, great weather, great music, great crowd, and best of all made some new friends. The Artists Den is fantastic! I'm a believer.
